Not a super flexy slender Yoga chick talks "the Power of Balance”
What is balance? The word shows up everywhere and in every context, yet it always points to the same idea: an even, harmonious distribution of something. Energy, time, attention, effort. Simple in theory, slightly more complicated in real life.
We hear phrases like “work life balance” and “balanced diet” so often that they almost lose meaning. Balance is supposed to apply to everything. How much time we spend alone versus how much time we spend with others. Time indoors versus time outdoors. Ambition versus contentment. Doing versus resting. Even our emotional and mental states are expected to be nicely balanced, as if there were a universal setting we could all agree on and stick to.
But what does balance actually look like? Is there a formula or a checklist?
You already know the answer, right? There is no formula as balance is not an absolute fixed point. It is personal, seasonal, and constantly changing. Balance depends on YOU.
Think about how different you feel throughout the year. In summer, you might need less sleep and crave lighter food. In winter, you naturally want to slow down, rest more, and eat warmer meals. Neither is wrong as both are intelligent responses to your environment.
The same applies to your energy during the day. Some days, moving your body in the morning feels effortless while on others, the idea of a morning workout feels like a personal attack, and suddenly an evening walk sounds much more reasonable. Productivity and concentration follow similar patterns. There are moments when your mind is sharp and focused, and others when even replying to a simple message feels impossible. Balance here is not forcing yourself into a schedule that no longer fits. It is listening and adapting. Of course, sometimes we don’t really have a choice and some tasks must be taken care of. I can think of being cozy and comfortable on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and having to get up to go to the bathroom. You can postpone it for a bit but eventually you must succumb 😅
This is where Yoga becomes a beautiful teacher. On the mat, balance is never about holding a pose perfectly. Also because “perfectly” means nothing. There is no such thing as perfection. It is much more about constantly adjusting. In Tree Pose, you sway, in Warrior III, you wobble, in a balancing posture, you are always moving slightly, making tiny corrections to stay upright. The moment you stop adapting, you fall. Balance is dynamic, not static.
Yoga also teaches balance beyond the physical. Some days, your practice is strong and fiery. Other days, it is slow and introspective. A balanced practice is not the same sequence every day; you may start with Asana, Pranayama and finish in meditation or exactly the opposite. There should not be a rigid routine or plan.
Emotional balance works the same way. It does not mean feeling calm and happy all the time. It means allowing emotions to move without letting them completely take over… or maybe they do take completely over, you unleash the Kraken and then compose yourself again observing what was the trigger and what you still have to work on. We are here on this planet to have the human experience and these feelings exist so explore them.
So maybe balance is less about dividing things evenly and more about paying attention to how you feel and to what you need without going into extremes (a very dangerous area). It’s not something you achieve once and then check off your list but much rather constant work, like going to the hairdresser… unless you want to look like someone that got electrocuted (not judgement, everyone has different taste). And just like in Yoga, the practice is not about never losing balance. It is about moving past your comfort zone, noticing when you do, and gently finding your way back.
