Not a super flexy slender Yoga chick talks "the Power of Santosha"

Updated: Aug 11

Santosha literally means contentment and is one of the five Niyama, which are part of the eight limbs of Yoga.

Santosha teaches us that we don’t need big, exciting things, dramatic highs and lows, or external achievements to feel satisfied, at peace. In fact, we don’t need anything external at all to experience Santosha. And that’s exactly why it’s so powerful.

Happiness, on the other hand, tends to be tied to the outside world. "I’m happy because the sun is shining." "I’m happy because I’m seeing my friend." "I’m happy because I got paid." "I’m happy because it’s Christmas."

But what happens when the sun hides, your friend cancels, the salary’s delayed, or Christmas is over? Yep, you guessed it… say it with me: you’re left chasing the next thing that can make you feel happy again.

Santosha doesn’t play that game. It’s internal. It’s a deep state of being that isn’t influenced by the weather, the people around you, your bank account, or the calendar. Santosha comes from within, and because it does, you are fully in charge of it. There’s no blaming, no outsourcing, and no loopholes.

But how do you know what brings you Santosha? To answer that, you need to know yourself. Your true Self. Not the version you post on social media, not the one your family expects, and definitely not the one performing for friends. The true Self is buried deeper. Actually, to get there, you first need to understand what is not your true Self: your job, your personality, your likes and dislikes, your mind, your ego... Yep, another guess: it takes effort. It won’t happen overnight, and no, it’s not a weekend hobby. It's a full-time relationship. You’re basically dating yourself and trying to uncover every secret.

Why would you want to go through all that? Well... wouldn’t it be amazing if every single day felt simple, grounded, and peaceful? If you could wake up completely untethered by what happens outside of you?

Meditation is the pathway to Santosha. It slowly introduces you to the “you” that isn’t actually you. It helps you watch those erratic thoughts, notice the inner noise, and realize: Whoa… I’m not those thoughts.

Give it a try: sit and observe your thoughts and if you have questions, ask away 😘
