Not a super flexy slender Yoga chick talks "the Power of your Liver”

Let’s take a moment to honor one of the most underappreciated organs in the body. No, it’s not your heart, and no, not your lungs either, although they certainly do important things like keeping you alive and allow to sigh dramatically when life feels like a bad episode of Friends. Ok, a bad episode of Grey’s Anatomy, as I don’t believe ANY episodes from Friends are bad. Huge fan, HUGEE! Back to the topic… I’m talking about your liver, that brownish, quietly determined powerhouse tucked under your right ribcage, working overtime without ever asking for a raise, applause, or even a vacation day.

The liver doesn’t get the glamour it deserves. There are Yoga flows for your hips, guided meditations for your heart, videos on various channels for your jawline and double chin, and entire skincare industries dedicated to that one pimple. But when was the last time someone said, “Hey, let’s do a liver check-in”? It gets no personalized emojis, rarely gets hashtagged, and I doubt that any trendy detox spa is named after it. And yet, if your liver could talk, it would probably say something like, “I’m doing my best here, could you maybe skip the cheese board with a side of angry emotions?”

Your liver is basically your body’s version of airport security, customs, waste management, a highly-skilled healer, and a Michelin-star kitchen all rolled into one. It filters toxins, stores vitamins and minerals, produces bile to digest fats, regulates blood sugar, processes hormones, and breaks down medications, alcohol, and emotional baggage you’ve been carrying since you were forced to cut your hair as a child. In traditional medicine like Chinese and Ayurveda, the liver is considered the seat of unprocessed anger and repressed frustration. If you’ve ever felt “liverish” after an argument, a meltdown, or a hormonal tornado, then you know exactly what I mean.

(A very contradicting sentence coming up, I warned you ;) ) Modern science is finally catching up with what ancient wisdom has been observing for centuries. The liver isn’t just about keeping your blood clean physically but also emotionally. A sluggish liver can leave you feeling tired, puffy, moody, anxious, bloated, or just like someone who keeps opening the fridge hoping for clarity. On the flip side, a happy liver brings better energy, clearer skin, smoother digestion, improved mood, and the kind of calm presence that makes people ask what you’ve been drinking. (Spoiler: it’s probably lemon water, not rosé.)

In Yoga, we talk about balance, detoxification, and flow. Three words your liver absolutely lives for. Twists, side bends, and gentle compressions can help stimulate the liver area and encourage fresh circulation. Pranayama and meditation help reduce cortisol, lowering the stress load on the liver. Even simple, deep belly breathing massages the liver gently from the inside out, reminding it that it's not alone in this crazy carousel.

To boost your liver, your morning should start with warm lemon water. To further promote liver health, you need to cut down on processed foods and refined sugar. Move your body daily! You can walk up the stairs (5 times), do a Yoga class, or dance it out in your living room to your favorite beat. And most importantly, when you feel anger rising, don’t bury it under politeness or caffeine. Feel it, express it (ideally not against someone), write it out, shake it off, scream into a pillow, or have a solid cry. Your liver would rather you sob than suppress.

So please, express a moment of gratitude for your liver.
